What is Intrinsa and how does it work?
Intrinsa™ is not yet available and a release date of 2005 is not guaranteed.
It’s a fact at least 43% of women suffer from sexual disorders. Low libido, also known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is the most common kind of sexual dysfunction found in almost 30% of women. It represents a noticeable lack of sexual thoughts or fantasies and no receptivity to sexual intercourse which triggers distress in woman.
Testosterone has a significant role in the sexual desire of both women and men. As women get older, the testosterone level decreases regularly, leading to a low interest and desire in sexual activity. In addition at this point memory and mood changes can occur. It’s a long known fact that testosterone therapy helps women recover their sexual interest and libido as well as their welfare. Other possible benefits include vaginal lubrication and libido, clitoral sensitivity and heightened arousal. The FDA approved testosterone based treatments years ago, but only for men with decreased sexual desire, so many doctors had to prescribe it “off label” for women.
The Intrinsa patch supplies testosterone via the skin (transdermally), technique more efficient and safer than other methods of testosterone replacement. As the testosterone enters the blood flow at a gradual, permanent ratio a constant level can be maintained. Intrinsa is a transparent patch and has the size of an egg. The patch is worn unobtrusively on the abdomen.
Even though Intrinsa represents a milestone in the domain of sexual medicine, by admitting that female sexual disorders are equal to men’s, it’s important to take into account that not every sexual problem women have can be treated medically.
A very important detail mustn’t be overlooked. For women, sexual disorder, such as sexual satisfaction, is much more complex. Men suffer from erectile problems only which in almost 90% of cases can be treated by Viagra, while a low libido is only one of the many sexual problems women have. Low testosterone level is merely one of the causes it can due to. Although testosterone occupies an important place in treating female sexual disorders, there will probably never be a pill like treatment for women. Female sexuality is too closely connected with feelings and relationships for an all-in-one medical treatment.
Possible side effects of testosterone therapy, topical or otherwise, include increased facial hair, clitoral enlargement, weight gain and high cholesterol. Nevertheless, the side effects presented above can be tempered by taking suitable dosages following doctor’s indications.
